Connectivity is everywhere! Almost every new electronic device manufactured has some form of communication capability. USB, Ethernet, and Bluetooth are just some of the now familiar names that are popping up in almost all industry segments.
The incorporation of these new communication capabilities have allowed a degree of monitoring and control which has never before been possible. They have also enabled the ability to provide software upgrades remotely, prolonging the lifetime of many devices and adding exciting new features.
Choosing the correct communication protocol for your product is one thing, signal integrity, range, and power consumption are others to consider. Then will the communications electronics be integrated with modular or discreet components?
In this guide we showcase 3,500 of the latest communication products including the latest design kits, modules, microprocessors and connectors for both the most popular and some of the more niche proprietary communication protocols.
Types of connectivity solutions:
Wireline electronic devices
If customers are cost-conscious, need maximum performance of their communication designs, and don’t require mobility, then wireline communication solutions are probably right for them. Like Ethernet Local Area Networks (LANs), wireline communications always require central devices like hubs and routers to accommodate other devices. Examples of wireline communication systems can include fixed telephone, cable television, internet access, ADSL broadband, and fibre-optic communications.
Wireless electronic devices
Wireless communications today covers a very wide array of applications via radio frequency, microwave, and infrared. A Wi-Fi enabled device, such as a cell phone and PDA, can connect to the Internet within the range of a wireless network connected to the Internet. Some cities have gone completely wireless by installing Wi-Fi city-wide. As opposed to wireline communications, wireless communications can provide additional freedom and save installation, but less reliability and security.
Connectivity
One requirement of communication device designs is flexibility, which means the communication device should have multiple connectivity capabilities to communicate with other devices and transfer different data content. The communication industry has defined a series of interfacing standards to connect devices to devices, such as USB, CAN, PCI, etc. Modern microcontrollers have integrated some of these capabilities in one chip, including reliable transceivers with the transmitter and a receiver sharing common circuitry within a single package.
Supporting components for electronic communication products
Like other technologies, communication technology needs certain supporting components. These components compensate the core communication technology to complete the design of the whole communication system and can include fuses, switches, relays, enclosures, fans, antennas, and many more besides. The largest sub section here is perhaps interconnect devices. Many connector manufacturers have dedicated communication products (just think of phone jacks and Ethernet cables)
